The case came to public attention after a post shared by X (formerly Twitter) user @stainleesss described how the woman was attacked early one morning on her way to the office. The unidentified assailants are said to have violently beaten her and then emptied her bank account of approximately ₦8.5 million. She was later dumped at the front gate of the Assembly complex, reportedly with no security presence in the area.

“She was brutally assaulted, and the assailants emptied her bank account of approximately 8.5 million naira,” the user wrote. “Afterward, they abandoned her in front of the House of Assembly in Ikeja. There wasn’t a single police officer in sight.”

Following the harrowing ordeal, the woman managed to get to the Ikeja Police Station to file an official complaint. However, she was allegedly redirected to the Alagbon office without any immediate help, leaving her stranded and frustrated.

The user further explained that the victim, a banker, had taken it upon herself to investigate and gather information on the perpetrators. Despite her efforts, the incident had gone unresolved for over four weeks, with no apparent action from authorities.

The incident has ignited conversations online about the state of security in Lagos and the perceived inefficiencies of the police force. Many users expressed outrage and fear, with some suggesting reforms and others warning against carrying sensitive banking apps on mobile phones.

See some reactions from X below:

@SquareC123: “Sorry for her. But a banker should know better. Why carry an ATM with that kind of money? If app, why have such app on your phone when you can always download afresh and delete afterwards when done with your transactions?”

@bamidele_ken: “Banks should start using facial recognition for transfers above 50k and sums less than that after 3 transfers. With these, when you lose your phone, you won’t lose all your life savings.”

@Are_dion: “Lagos is not safe, but because many of you allow blue paid account cover your reality, Lagos is not safe. If you have money, don’t have an app for it, only accessible when you go into the banking hall. Lagos is not safe. Avoid linking your number via USSD to your main account.”

@Ibukun420: “If she was protesting against hardship and a failed economy, they would have given her attention. But to help an ordinary person who is not a politician? That one go be miracle o. You supposed tag Ben ten and Ire o.”

@ThreeLeftThumbs: “We need private detectives or law enforcement organisations in this country since the police have basically turned their service to pay-as-you-go but still can’t operate competently.”

@smalltallest88: “Tomorrow somebody will wake up with sympathy for the police force when terrible things begin to happen to them.”

@xybox: “If the woman decides to use 50M to japa tomorrow, some myopic people will say she wasted money. She couldn’t get assistance from the police in her own fatherland.”
