A Nigerian man, who recently received overwhelming support from the public in raising over ₦22 million for a life-changing leg surgery, has now voiced concern after being advised to gamble the funds on sports betting.
The unusual advice came via a private message, which the man, known on X (formerly Twitter) as @_belikebaddy, decided to share publicly. The message, sent by another user, boldly suggested that he take ₦20 million out of the donated amount and bet it in hopes of a massive return.
This suggestion surfaced only days after @_belikebaddy’s medical case gained viral attention through a fundraiser spearheaded by social media influencer Dickson. The campaign successfully raised the ₦22 million target in under two weeks, with many Nigerians contributing out of goodwill to help fund his surgery.
However, shortly after confirming the success of the campaign and announcing his upcoming surgery, the man received a message that caught him — and many others — off guard.
The sender of the message wrote, “Free ₦16 million, run it brother. Run it off the books without anyone knowing,” implying that he should discreetly bet the money without informing the donors.
The beneficiary, seemingly shocked by the suggestion, posted a screenshot of the message on his X page. The post quickly gained traction, sparking intense conversation across the platform.
While some users jokingly entertained the idea, others sternly warned against it, stating that such advice was reckless and showed a lack of concern for his well-being and the trust placed in him by donors.
Many felt the suggestion was not only unethical but dangerous, especially considering that the donated funds were specifically meant for a medical procedure that could significantly improve the man's quality of life.
