Renowned Nigerian activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, has raised renewed alarms about the worsening state of insecurity across Nigeria, following a terrifying kidnap attempt that was recently caught on CCTV in Delta State.
Taking to his official account on X (formerly Twitter), Gwamnishu shared a chilling video clip of a failed kidnapping attempt that occurred outside a private residence located in the Ogwashi-Uku area of Delta State. The footage has quickly gone viral and triggered widespread public concern.
According to Gwamnishu, the house shown in the footage was not being targeted for the first time. He revealed that a similar incident took place earlier in January, suggesting a pattern that may point to coordinated surveillance or targeting by criminal gangs operating in the region.
In the video, the homeowner can be seen driving into his compound in the evening. With heightened awareness and urgency, the man quickly exits his car and rushes into his home, barely moments before a group of suspected kidnappers arrive at the premises. The assailants, armed and aggressive, begin attempting to force their way inside through windows and other possible entry points but are ultimately unsuccessful in their efforts.
Overlaying the video with his own commentary, Gwamnishu provided practical safety tips to Nigerians, particularly those residing in high-risk zones or returning home late at night. He emphasized the importance of precautionary measures in avoiding similar scenarios.
He said: “If you’re going to your house, call someone at home to stand at the gate. So, immediately you arrive, you drive in and lock the gate, no delays.”
He continued: “You need to observe carefully, and again, install a 360-degree camera in your premises. That way, you can monitor your surroundings from your phone before returning home. These small steps can make the difference between safety and danger.”
The video has sparked a new wave of conversations online, with citizens expressing fears over the increase in violent crimes, especially in semi-urban and rural areas of Nigeria. Many users commended Gwamnishu for bringing attention to the matter and using his platform to educate and inform the public about personal safety strategies.
Others called on government authorities to ramp up security measures and intelligence efforts to dismantle kidnapping networks that continue to terrorize communities across the country.
