Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced a tough challenge in the 2026 Group C World Cup Qualifiers as they were held to a 1-1 draw against South Africa. Despite playing at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the Nigerian team struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, finding themselves trailing at half-time. South Africa's Themba Zwane broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with an impressive solo effort, putting the pressure on Finidi George’s men. However, the second half saw a resurgence from the Super Eagles, as Fisayo Dele-Bashiru netted an early equalizer after receiving a precise through pass from Alex Iwobi. Despite continued attacking threats, including Samuel Chukwueze hitting the woodwork and Ademola Lookman's denied attempts, Nigeria couldn't secure a win. Terem Moffi also missed a crucial chance, leading to a stalemate in the match. As a result of the draw, the Super Eagles dropped to 5th place in Group C of the CAF qualifiers. The team now looks forward to their upcoming match against Benin on Monday, June 10, hoping to secure a better result.
