The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the 2025 Anambra State election, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, has reportedly been shot by unidentified gunmen in Abuja, sending shockwaves across political circles.
According to sources close to the politician, the attack occurred late on Friday night in the highbrow Wuse 2 district of the Federal Capital Territory. Ezenwafor was said to be returning from a private meeting when he was ambushed and shot multiple times by the assailants, who immediately fled the scene.
The PDP candidate is currently receiving emergency medical care at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja. Medical personnel are working to stabilize him, and an urgent surgery was scheduled to extract bullets from his body. His condition remains critical but stable, according to insiders.
Speaking briefly from his hospital bed in the early hours of Saturday, a weakened and visibly traumatized Ezenwafor described the incident as a terrifying brush with death. “I’m currently in the hospital. The doctors are making efforts to operate me so that they can pull out bullets from my body,” he said in a faint voice.
While full details of the shooting remain sketchy, members of his media team have confirmed that he suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed into emergency care immediately after the attack. Eyewitnesses say the attackers appeared to be waiting for him and fled before law enforcement could arrive.
Security operatives have not yet issued an official statement concerning the incident. However, a source close to the PDP campaign structure revealed that a formal report has been lodged with the police, who have since commenced investigations into the matter.
Chief Jude Ezenwafor, who once contested for the presidency under the Labour Party, recently returned to the PDP and successfully emerged as the party’s flagbearer for the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for later this year.
His candidacy had been considered a significant development in the state's political landscape, and news of the attack has sparked widespread concern among party supporters and political stakeholders alike.
