Wike Backs Governor Okpebholo on Obi Visit Protocol

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has thrown his weight behind Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, stating that the governor was absolutely right in requesting that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, should give prior notice before visiting the state.

Wike made the statement while speaking in Benin City during the official launch of newly introduced modern mass transit buses rolled out by the Edo State government as part of its transportation modernization initiative.

Addressing the issue directly, Wike explained that a presidential candidate’s visit to any state, regardless of political affiliation, ought to be communicated to the state’s sitting governor. He emphasized the importance of coordination, logistics, and—most importantly—security.

“When I was governor of Rivers State, when Peter Obi was coming to my state, he notified me,” Wike recalled. “I personally arranged for vehicles and logistics to support his visit. Because at that level, if anything happens to a presidential candidate while in my territory, the blame will be on me.”

Turning his attention to Governor Okpebholo, Wike publicly endorsed his earlier statement by saying:

“Governor Okpebholo, the statement you made is correct. Obi must inform you before coming to Edo State.”

Wike also took the opportunity to dispel claims circulating online that the Edo governor had issued a threat against Peter Obi. He clarified that the governor’s request for advance notice was neither confrontational nor politically motivated but was in line with standard governance practices across the country.

He stressed that such notifications are common courtesy and a matter of administrative protocol, ensuring a well-coordinated and secure visit, especially when involving high-profile figures like presidential hopefuls.
