Three students of Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, have tragically lost their lives after a reckless street race, reportedly fueled by a ₦30,000 wager, spiraled out of control. The ill-fated contest also claimed the lives of two innocent pedestrians who were caught in the path of the speeding vehicle.
According to reports circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the young men had challenged each other to a high-speed competition, each contributing ₦30,000 to a prize pot meant for the winner. Eyewitnesses revealed that the students were determined to prove their driving prowess, with little regard for safety or the environment in which they were racing.
Sadly, the thrill-seeking moment turned deadly when their vehicle lost control at a bend and veered off the road. The car crashed into a roadside shop, instantly killing two pedestrians who were conducting their normal daily activities nearby. The violent impact also left the three students with fatal injuries, and they were pronounced dead at the scene before medical help could arrive.
Shocking video footage from the aftermath of the crash shows a crowd of devastated residents gathered at the scene, mourning the sudden and senseless loss of life. The lifeless bodies of the pedestrians could be seen in the clip, covered with makeshift cloths, while onlookers expressed anger, disbelief, and sorrow.
As news of the tragedy spread, many Nigerians took to the comment section under the original post to share their grief and frustration at the recklessness that led to the accident, while calling for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, particularly among young drivers.
