Former Nigerian Vice President and perennial presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has once again sparked national discourse after hinting at a possible run in the 2027 presidential election, this time possibly under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The speculation began following a post shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), which captured moments from Atiku’s recent interaction with journalists during a media briefing. The conversation quickly gained traction after the former PDP flagbearer appeared confident and unbothered when asked about his political future.
When pressed by a reporter on whether he would be running for president again and when Nigerians could expect a formal declaration, Atiku replied, “We will let you know, we will give you formal announcement.” His response left room for interpretation, but the tone suggested that preparations might already be underway.
A follow-up question from another journalist probed what would happen if he failed to clinch the party’s ticket. Atiku laughed off the idea and responded with confidence, “Have I ever failed to get the ticket? I’m confident.” His rhetorical reply highlighted his political track record and long-standing presence in Nigeria’s democratic contests.
The former Vice President also addressed concerns about his age and the increasing demand for younger political leaders. In his view, democracy is built on inclusiveness. “This is democracy. The young and old can contest,” he said, defending the right of all Nigerians, regardless of age, to aspire for leadership positions.
His comments triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with the topic trending across various platforms. While some users supported his ambition, others questioned the necessity of another run, calling for a generational shift in Nigerian politics.
