Popular political commentator, Isaac Fayose, has openly disagreed with the recent statement made by Anambra State governor, Professor Charles Soludo, regarding the issue of politicians choosing to serve only one term in office.
Governor Soludo, during a recent political address, stated that any politician who declares an intention not to seek a second term in office is in need of a psychiatric evaluation. He strongly asserted that such a decision defies political logic and raises questions about the person's mental state, drawing sharp criticism from the public and political observers alike.
In response to this remark, Isaac Fayose took to social media to express his disapproval, using the example of the late South African president, Nelson Mandela, as a symbol of true democratic leadership and humility. Fayose pointed out that Mandela served only one term as president, despite widespread calls for him to continue, and yet remains one of the most respected leaders in modern history.
Fayose argued that Soludo's comment was not only dismissive but also historically inaccurate and dangerous, as it implies that service must be long to be impactful. He emphasized that leadership is not about how long one serves but the legacy one leaves behind.
He said: “There was a man, Nelson Mandela. He did just one term. The second term they said leader come and lead us and he said, no, I am weak but my spirit is with you. Let someone else lead. It’s not everyone that wants to lead for eight years. Eight years of no future…”
Fayose's comments have reignited debate around term limits, governance, and the expectations placed on elected officials in Nigeria. Many citizens have taken to social media to weigh in, with a majority supporting Fayose’s position and criticizing Soludo for what they described as an elitist and tone-deaf remark.
